A new focus

Alex and I have been discussing the future of the Bunnell project. One thing we have noticed whenever we speak to UVU administrators about the Cafe aspect of our idea they immediately say, "Well, there is a cafe in the new library." At that point, for them at least, the discussion is over.

While it is true that the new library does indeed serve coffee and has places to sit, it is far from the atmosphere we are trying to create for the Bunnell. This dichotomy between what the administrators consider a cafe and what we think the Bunnell could be, has pointed out that the cafe aspect of our project is really secondary to our aim of saving the structure itself.

During this transitional time as a new president is chosen, and the school is getting used to its new status as a university, we think it is wise to focus on saving the Bunnell Pioneer Home and making it a part of student life.

Of course the cafe portion of the overall plan is still important to the process, but we think focusing on saving the structure itself has the best chance of getting the attention of administrators on campus.

Leave a comment below and tell us what you think of our new focus. We need your feedback in order to craft a plan that will work. Thanks!

I would LOVE a cafe in the Bunnell house. The library has an atmosphere of a place to study but I can imagine that the Bunnell Cafe would be more of a place to chat with friends or sit back and read. I would hope that there would NOT be a TV playing but perhaps a place for poetry readings or a small live band from time to time. Cozy.

I'm sure there is room on an a University campus for more than one type of coffee selling establishment.

Could not agree more Heather. And I can promise you there will be no wall-mounted TVs blaring.

Alex, the problem is money. If we could locate a donor or several donors who specifically wanted the Pioneer House to be renovated and could work through campus entities to get alot of the work done by students and volunteers to save costs, then it could happen. Otherwise you will continue getting comments like "there's a cafe in the library" which actually is the administration's way of saying "No" in a "polite" way because the budget on campus is tight right now like it is everywhere else! But I too would absolutely love to see the Pioneer House brought up to code and used! It could be a fantastic addition to the campus!

Now that we know just how mediocre the Library cafe is perhaps there is more motivation for something exciting. Would the Bunnell as you envision it have to be run under the auspices of food services? I'm sadly not very impressed with their set of products.

Don...I would hope that The Bunnell would operate outside of the school's food services. Ideally I would like to see something similar to UC Davis's Coffee House. http://coffeehouse.ucdavis.edu/

From what I hear UC Davis has some of the best dining of any university in the country.

Considering that the Bunnell's location was originally home to the Culinary Arts program, it would make sense to get them involved.

My Grandmother was born in this house in 1919. She grew up in this house and still tells great stories of playing in the canal above the house and finding arrowheads nearby. I would love to see a pastry shop like Great Harvest in Ogden and like Heather, a small poetry and band area.

It would be wonderful to take my grandmother there and let her dig up even more memmories, she just turned 90.

Who is your Grandmother Nate? I know Helen Bunnell Weeks (who is no doubt a relative of yours) quite well, and she has been very supportive in our plans to restore the Bunnell Pioneer home. Are you a UVU student Nate?
